    Location and size

Piedmont is a wine region in northwestern Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. The name can be translated literally as "at the foot of the mountains", which refers to the immediate vicinity of the Alps. Vines are grown here on about 48,000 hectares, which represents about 7 percent of the total Italian cultivated area. The largest and most important city is Turin. In terms of viticulture, the area can be divided into four sub-areas: L'Astigiano, Le Langhe, Il Monferrato and Il Nord.

    History and Tradition

Viticulture has existed in Piedmont since ancient times. It is not clear if it dates back to the Celts or if it came to the region with the Greeks and Romans. Without a doubt, however, we can speak of a very long wine tradition. However, Piedmontese wines only achieved their worldwide fame in the second half of the 20th century. Before that, winegrowers relied on mass production and quality awareness had to develop.

    Climate and Soil

Piedmont is characterized by a mild continental climate with hot and dry summers. There are sometimes very strong fluctuations in temperature - both in terms of the change between day and night and in terms of the seasons. The nearby Po River favors the typical formation of fog, which positively influences the ripening of the grapes. The soils are mainly limestone and sand, but clayey sites are also found, resulting in a varied terroir.

    Typical grape varieties

Piedmont is a classic red wine region, as the proportion of red vines is around 90 percent. Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera are just three examples of world-renowned Piedmont red wines. Nevertheless, the popular white wines should not be completely forgotten, among them the popular products Asti Spumante, Moscato d'Asti,Gavi, Roero Arneis or Timorasso. The most cultivated varieties in Piedmont are

for red wine Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto and
for white wine Arneis, Cortese and Moscato.
    Quality and quantity

Every year, 2.5 to 3 million hectoliters of wine are produced in Piedmont. The proportion of quality wines averages 90 percent. They come from a total of 43 DOC and 17 DOCG regions of the production area. These figures illustrate the excellent quality of the products of Piedmont's winegrowers and justify the excellent reputation of red wines from Piedmont. In terms of quality, only Tuscany can compete with Piedmont.
